What Is Frame Damage?
The frame is any part of the vehicle that supports the main structure of the car. The frame itself is divided into different sections. During a collision, one or more of these sections can suffer damage. It is important to note that only one section has to be damaged. Frame components include the core support, unirail, quarter and rocker panels, rear support, and apron, to name a few. Some sections are more prone to damage than others. Damage to certain sections can also be more devastating than others, as well.
Are There Symptoms of Frame Damage?
Often, damage is obvious. The car may shake or shimmy, or it may pull to one side while you are driving. Minor damage may only be apparent at higher speeds, while more severe damage may affect the car even when you are traveling at a low speed. If the car suffered major denting or crumpling, particularly to the rear or front ends, then frame damage is much more likely compared to the relatively minor damage of a fender bender. In some cases, the car may even appear askew. For example, the tires on one side may seem to sit closer to the wheel wells or appear out of alignment.
Is the Car Still Drivable?
A car can still be drivable if the damage is minor, but that doesn't mean it is advised. A damaged frame can lead to more wear and tear on other components of the car, namely on tires and the drive train. It can also make the car harder to handle, especially at higher speeds. Frame damage may impact gas mileage as well. There are also safety concerns when the frame is damaged. Certain safety components may not work as well, or they may fail entirely when the frame is damaged.
Can Frame Damage Be Repaired?
Whether the damage is repairable depends on the extent and location of the damage. In many cases, frame damage can be repaired by a collision specialist. Accessible parts may be able to be straightened or replaced entirely. The main concern is cost. Sometimes the cost of frame repair is more than the insured value of the car. In this case, the car is usually totaled, so you will receive the insurance payout instead.
