Restoring Chrome After An Accident
If you were recently involved in an accident, you are probably most concerned with the function of your vehicle. Frame damage, for instance, is a common problem that can affect your vehicle's value and operation. However, cosmetic damage is also an issue you should be concerned with, especially since the look of your vehicle can affect its value if and when you decide to sell or trade it. Small dents and dings should be repaired immediately, but focusing on any distress that has occurred to chrome accents of your vehicle is also important. Here are a few options for restoring your vehicle's chrome.
Remove
If possible, you should remove the chrome piece that has been damaged during the accident.
For example, if a chrome bumper or chrome detailing has been damaged, remove it to inspect the underlying body for signs of damage and potential rust or corrosion.
Store the chrome pieces away while you focus on the other areas of the vehicle.
Clean
Once you address the other areas of the vehicle, you can begin working on the chrome pieces. Even though it may not have occurred during the actual accident, the chrome may have started to rust on the bottom section where it met the vehicle's body.
A wire brush or sandpaper can be used to gently clean off any rusty residue affecting the underside portion of the chrome. Use a solution of soap and water to wash away any leftover rust and metal before rinsing the chrome piece off with warm water.
Enhance
After inspecting the vehicle and cleaning off any rust or debris from the chrome piece, you can begin focusing on the surface of the chrome. Cleaning the surface will allow you to remove dirt and debris while enhancing its overall shine. In addition, this will give you the time to inspect the actual chrome surface for scratches, dents, and dings.
A traditional glass cleaner can be used to clean and enhance the chrome surface.
After cleaning and drying the chrome surface, apply a metal polish to the surface using a piece of steel wool. The combination of the metal polish and steel wool not only enhances the shine of the chrome, but it can also buff out any small scratches and imperfections caused by the accident.
Avoid using the steel wool on the actual vehicle's body, though, since the abrasive texture will damage the vehicle's paint.
